Global Sound Movement - VR Hani Drum

I have recently worked with The Global Sound Movement, in order to bring the Hani Drum into Virtual Reality using the Unreal Engine. The Global Sound Movement, venture the world in order to record sounds of rare instruments meaning their sounds will live on forever. Proceeds made from these sounds are then sent back to the areas of where sounds are recorded!

With the recorded sounds, I am able to use these and replicate the audio as users play the drum. This means the user are playing the exact sounds that have been recorded. These sounds can be affected by reverb volumes, allowing the user to play the drum in VR, with the same noises and reverbs they would have heard in China.

The hits on the drum are also based on the velocity of the users hands, allowing you to have full control of how loud you wish to hit the drum. This is also backed up with feedback through controllers, allowing the user to further their experience.

With this project we have been lucky enough to showcase the VR experience at the British Science Festival 2019 and live on BBC North West. This is an ongoing project with the aims to help future proof instruments, preserving them for future generations to enjoy.
